Spectacular stuff, but what an odd way to drain a dam, I can't even imagine the downstream scouring + flash floods unless the river reaches a large lake not too far away.
nah, you'd be relying more on flood plains, several of which their would near definitely be down the river course. They would also take and filter out the debris from the detonation. Then, of course, it all flushes back to the main watercourse via groundwater.
that's a lot healthier than heading straight into a major water body
