Right, my opinions of the ones I know, from worst to best: Fraserburgh (The Broch to locals) is a total dive. Lots of druggies, very boring (these two facts are linked), impoverished etc. I used to go there every Saturday for Music Centre, y'see :) Elgin is a bit better. It's not that big, but bigger than Fraserburgh. It has one tiny cinema, some ok shops and seems a fairly nice but dull place to live. Aberdeen is pretty good - not as big or interesting as Edinburgh, but has some nice things, such as the Belmont cinema, lots of pretty granite buildings and some decent shops. My brother, sister and brother-in-law all work there (my bro-in-law for the uni, the others for oil-related companies) and I know some people doing degrees there. I think housing is expensive there compared to the other two, but the extra cost would be worth it imo.
I'm afraid I know bugger-all about the gay scene in any of them, but I'd guess that the Broch is narrow-minded, Elgin possibly ok but probably lacking clubs and Aberdeen should be fine. I'm afraid liberal attitudes take a while to cross the mountains around Grampian :(
