• Wisconsin Death Trip Photographs - a set on Flickr
  Born in 1852 near Rochester, New York, Charles Van Schaick in 1885 opened a studio in his wife's home town, Black River Falls. There he was town photographer for fifty-seven years. His work includes both studio portraits and richly varied and intimate snapshots of small-town life.

Thanks for the Wisconsin Death Trip link, I remember my mum had a book of some of these photos and it used to frighten me when I was a wee'un. Some very nice stuff there.
