Actually, according to the seminar I just went to as part of my shiny new web editing job, web standard form suggests avoid italics at all costs. (See what I did there?) Latin names is something they allow an exception for, as it happens, but they'd really prefer it if no one used italics ever when at all avoidable on the internets because it's harder to read and people don't really read pages anyway, they just scan them.
