There is a free version, I'm using it.

It asks for a mail address to send a serial number to, but I just used google and found one ..

got it now - my own ineptitude at googling... Is it enough to just install and leave? Is it going to alert me to Trojans etc, or will I have to do a full scan every few days?

Avast is fantastic, get it! It's free, you just have to fill in a registration form on the website and you get a registration code :)
