not really, it's only the crows and foxes that need killing - you can catch the stoat in a humane trap and relocate it, and the Kestral you can scare away with Rockets. (I got a good shot in at the Crow with the air rifle this morning!)
We shouldn't have to - we're building the colony up to a sufficient level. The Arctic Terns are already there and don't need saving from predators, but the Little Terns are years away from being able to cope.
And we wouldn't have to kill anything if people never used sandy beaches or nicked eggs, or if the North Sea ecosystem wasn't so royally fucked up from over-fishing!
(oh, and the job is about 49% bird watching, 50% talking to visitors, and about 1% actually killing things. 16 hors a day. The next person to ask me "are you enjoying your little holiday?" gets a slap for being a patronising deckhead)
