I buy sandwiches from the local deli for lunch, but would it be cheaper to make my own?
I work between 3 and 5 days a week in the office. For my lunch, I drive to the deli counter in the local garage, and buy a hand-made roll for £1.20. it's a 9 mile round trip, I pay 16p a mile flat rate for my vehicle. So £1.44 each trip, unless I leave late enough in the morning that the deli counter is open. Let's assume not..
£1.44 plus £1.20 for the actual sandwich = £2.64. I get the same one every day, because I am like that - a cheese, coleslaw and ham roll.
During a moment of insanity at the co-op last night, I bought a pack of 6 rolls, a small tub of coleslaw and some ham (I already have cheese) for 0.67+1.5+1.05 = £3.22. That should be enough to last me a week, right?
That's 250g of coleslaw, the smallest sized tub, and it is "use within 2 days of opening"
The salami, all 10 slices, also "use within 2 days of opening"
and the bread rolls are much smaller than they look, so I need two of them a day. Basically, two days lunches for £3.22 = which is still cheaper than going to the garage..
...but with shitloads more packaging and I bet I end up throwing half the coleslaw out. And the woman in the garage doesn't get my £1.20, which, after three years, she's probably come to rely on by now.
argh I can't decide which is cheaper (the petrol cost to the supermarket (26.6 miles round trip) doesn't count because I would be going there anyway) Interesting to work it out though, although probably only if you are me.
